The Host (2006)

Visual Design

In The Host there are many subtle visual design elements that create the mood and atmosphere. The use of water both simulates life and death, water along with toxic chemicals brings life to the monster, the water although not really shown gives the park family the ability to sell such favorite foods as squid, while when the dad/grandpa died it starts raining to change the mood to sadness.
With everyone scared of a fictitious virus we got the feeling it was bad with civilians and sick wearing medical masks provoking a little madness in the mass. The use of smoke also created the visual of deadly, smoke is used in the beginning with the morg. guy dumping the toxic chemicals down the drain as he was also wearing a re-breather and chemical mask. The use of smoke was then used again to weaken the monster and help free the two children.

The movie over all was alright, it wasn't as good as I felt it could have been however it wasn't a total blowout and did good on some aspects that could have made it way worse. For example even though it wasn't a big background on the monster they gave some which allowed the audience to fill in the rest with whatever they want. I would rate the movie a 6/10 because it just didn't captivate me in the way most movies would.
